The 211th Military Police Battalion (First Corps of Cadets) maintains the lineage of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, often credited as the "best officered regiment” in the Union Army. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, later commander of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment immortalized in the movie Glory, served as a company grade officer in the 2nd Massachusetts. Civil War campaign streamers awarded to the regiment include Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, and, as appearing in the opening scene of Glory, Antietam.
